Developing Successful Distance Learning Study Habits

A unique discipline is required when pursuing a degree online. Distance learning requires a student to practice effective time management and communication skills. The following study tips will help you:

Make time for study - Most distance learners have selected this form of education for it's convenience. We're busy, we have jobs and families... How do you fit in time for studying and completing assignments. Figure this out BEFORE classes start, make a plan and stick to it.

study habitsLose the distractions - If there is one thing that interferes with studying, it’s distractions. Find a place where you can concentrate on your studies, leaving your day to day tasks behind. A den or quiet room in your home would make a great study area. If not, consider taking your studies to the library. Sometimes in isn’t the location that is as distracting as the time of day you choose to study. Many successful distance learners prefer to study at night when it is the quietest. You cannot pay attention to studies while you are watching tv, doing the dishes, talking on the phone, etc.

Keep a routine - Your study habits are just that … habitual. Once you develop where and how you study best, stick with the routine. Consistency is the key to good study habits. Make sure you study at a time when you have a clear mind and enough time to accomplish the tasks at hand.

Do all of the work - On occasion some distance learning classes use reading materials as supplements to other audio/video or internet programs. It is important to use all of the study materials provided to get the most out of the class you paid for and perform on the highest level. Develop a study guide for each course and take great notes. Reread your study guide in conjunction with your assigned materials prior to taking your exams.

Use the support available to you - All distance learning colleges have a support system: instructor email, chat rooms, student forums, student services and electronic billboards. Use the support system to find answers and to spot check your progress against others enrolled in the course. Find study partners that you can work with online. Feel free to contact your instructor with any questions you may have, the moment you have those questions.

Take adequate breaks - Get out of your study area from time to time to clear your mind. Go for a walk or grab a bite to eat.

Reward you success - Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. Take some time for you. You deserve it!
