College Scholarship FAQ's

When should I start looking for scholarships?
Many students start searching for scholarships the last half of their Senior year in high school or even later. Start earlier! Once you have found scholarships to pursue, stay organized. We highly recommend starting your search earlier, the last half of your Junior year. And remember, in most instances you will need to go through this process for every year you plan on attending college.

I'm a graduate student. Are there scholarships I can apply for?
All levels of college through postgraduate study offer scholarships, work-study, fellowship programs, and low cost educational loans.

Why should I apply for a scholarship if it won't cover all of my tuition expenses?
Although it's possible to get awards that will pay for all of your expenses, you are correct. You will likely have to supplement scholarship monies with other sources. We recommend applying for a combination of programs including grants, work-study, and student loans to meet your financial commitments. That scholarship you didn't apply for might have contributed $500 or $2000 towards your educational expenses.

Why do most scholarships require writing an essay?
Many scholarship programs are looking for students who have set goals and take college seriously. They want to know their funds are being used well. One way to qualify applicants is requiring applicants to write an essay. The essays might be about your goals, your major field of study, or any number or other subjects.

Should I apply for every scholarship I find?
Don't waste your time applying for a scholarship for which you know you don't qualify. Focus on awards that are attainable that seem a good fit for you. Determine which scholarships fit and go for it!

What other materials will I need to provide with my scholarship application?
It's a good idea to be prepared with letters of reference from counselors, friends, or employers. You might also want to prepare a resume highlighting all aspects of your life including school, work, community, sports, clubs, affiliations, accomplishments, etc.
